Why you can trust UnderFit More Info

Our approach to content is the same as our approach to building a great wardrobe: it's about quality, not quantity. We only recommend products we believe in and would buy for ourselves or a friend.

Here's our editorial promise:

  1. We only recommend products we believe in and would buy for ourselves or a friend.
  2. We don’t accept payment for reviews, ever. We do sometimes receive press samples.
  3. Every review is hands-on, meaning we actually test drive the products.
  4. We cover brands regardless of our relationship with them (i.e., brands that don’t offer payment for traffic).

Your trust is our #1 priority, always. Please reach out with any questions, concerns or suggestions (service@underfit.com).

Buying a suit from an online retailer can be a bit of a mixed bag, but it’s become a popular option for men for both the convenience and sheer variety available.

You can get a suit in pretty much any cut, color, material or pattern imaginable, and it’s delivered right to your door. Sounds pretty awesome in theory. But we’ve tested these waters, and they’re not always so calm.

Unless you’re going with a made-to-measure suit, you better have the number of a good suit tailor as sizing can be a bit wonky from brand-to-brand. Shopping for quality can be problematic too, as you’re not really sure what you’re getting until it’s on your body.

We hear you. It’s tough. But that’s why we’re here to help. Our team did a deep dive on all of the popular online suit brands, and came back with our favorites across a bunch of different categories.

Before we get into the list, we’ll give you some insight on what exactly we were looking for.

How We Evaluated These Suit Brands

When checking out the best online stores to buy a suit, there were three primary areas of criteria that we looked at.

Convenience

We took a hard look at how easy it is to shop on the site, whether customizations were available, and other convenience factors like shipping times, communication, and whether financing was available.

Budget & Value

Not all suits were created equal, and therefore, prices will vary. Not all expensive suits are high-quality, and not all cheap suits should be dismissed.

We looked at online suit retailers for every budget. While suits vary wildly in their pricing, we analyzed exactly what you can expect from your hard-earned money. We made sure all the stores on this list deliver as promised on value.

Variety

We evaluated each online store in terms of their suit selections. For example, we looked at whether they sell for different body types and sizes – classic, modern and slim fit suits.

We also took into account the variety of styles available. If you’re looking for something a little different like a plaid suit, for example, we wanted to make sure you could get it. Also if you can buy both two- and three-piece suits or even suit separates, we scored that positively.

The 10 Best Online Retailers for Men’s Suits

1. Nordstrom

Screenshot from Nordstrom.com
  • Best For: Overall
  • Price range: $400 to $4000

Nordstrom has an excellent online selection of suits from a lot of different brands, from designer to lower end. The store hits high on the variety score, and with so many options available, you’re likely to find something quality within your budget if it’s higher than $400 (which it probably should be).

Don’t expect low prices across the board, though. Department stores have a lot of variety in style, and with that comes a lot of variety in pricing. You can get everything from Armani to Hugo Boss to ASOS and even Indochino.

But overall, we really dig their suit shopping experience due to the selection, shopping experience and robust, easy-to-use return policy.

There is also an in-store tailoring service, which is especially useful to achieve the perfect fit from an off-the-rack suit. Nordstrom tailors are professionals and usually know what they’re doing, but it can be hit-or-miss from location to location.

Obviously, there won’t be an opportunity to have your suit tailored to you unless you live close to a store where you can bring your suit to be altered.

One other drawback to shopping online with Nordstrom is that there’s no ‘try-before-you-buy’ option, so in terms of convenience, it doesn’t rate as well as some newer online retailers.

On the plus side, in terms of the choice available, there are many high-quality brands to choose from, including Nordstrom Men’s Shop, Armani, Hart Schaffner, J. Crew, Ted Baker, Kenneth Cole, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Topman, Peter Milla, Hickey Freeman, and many, many more.

2. Black Lapel

Screenshot from Blacklapel.com
  • Best For: Convenience
  • Price range: $600 to $1500

Black Lapel offers made-to-measure suits of pretty high quality, but your only real option is measuring yourself. It’s an interesting experience, and you’ll probably need help from a friend to get it done right. They do have guide videos that are really helpful, so it’s less scary than it seems.

The real benefit is the customizations. Like Indochino, everything is fully customizable. You can choose a one-, two- or three-button suit. You can choose between single or double breasted. You choose the lapel type, vents, pockets, lining pattern, pleats, cuffs, and on and on. You’re basically building your own suit.

But once you hit order, it only takes about four weeks to arrive at your house. If the fit doesn’t match what you’ve envisioned, you can also send it back and request alterations or they’ll give you $75 to take it to a local tailor.

Expect to pay pretty high prices for this service, however. Suits can easily cost over $1000, depending on your preference. But, in terms of getting a bang for your buck, Black Lapel delivers.

3. Bonobos

Screenshot from Bonobos.com
  • Best For: Range
  • Price range: $500 to $900

Bonobos specializes in menswear, with many of its biggest sellers being its suits. There are all sorts of fabrics to choose from in their wide range, from wool blends, cotton suits, slim-fit designs, dress pants in many different styles, and so much more.

While there are over 50 brick-and-mortar shops in North America where a sales rep will be able to help you get what you want, Bonobos makes online shopping easy, too, thanks to its convenient, user-friendly site. All you need to do is choose the style you want to wear, add your fit and size, and you’re good to go.

Although not necessarily known for suits,  blazers and sport coats, the brand has done a great job putting out a line of stylish, high-quality suits at affordable prices. For example, most of the suits you can buy there fall into the $550 range, and if you’re looking to go more affordable, the brand often has sales where suits can be had for under $400 (usually out-of-season). They obviously have other men’s clothing as well.

Bonobos’ return policy is also pretty solid. If you don’t like what you’ve received in the mail, it can be returned up to 45 days after the initial purchase, so peace of mind is included with each purchase. And, if you live in the US, all returns are free.

That’s a pretty good policy by our standards. Quality suits, reasonable prices and options for weddings – that’s a win. The only big drawback in our opinion is that the stores don’t offer tailoring services. So when you’re shopping, just make sure that you have a tailor in mind to use who can fit it to your body type perfectly.

4. Indochino

Screenshot from Indochino.com
  • Best for: Direct-to-customer
  • Price range: $400 to $550

Indochino only sells one brand – their own. While they have a vast choice of men’s suits, they also stock dress shoes, dress shirts, men’s tuxedos, and many accessories. What’s even better is that everything is fully customizable, so they have the convenience aspect pretty much nailed.

The brand specializes in a modern fit – think more slim and streamlined compared the suit your dad might wear.

Here’s how it works; using a direct-to-customer model, the buyer can choose a particular suit style and customize it to their specified fit. To do this, thanks to the power of the internet, all you need to do is follow the easy-to-use online instructions to take your measurements – you can even have your suit jacket monogrammed if you want.

In most larger U.S. cities, Indochino also has a retail presence. If you go to a showroom, they have staff that will measure you and ask about your preferences. This process usually takes about an hour, and it’s pretty pleasant.

After that, they handle the rest. Your custom suit or tux shows up at your house in a nice briefcase-sized box a few weeks later – or you can pick it up at the showroom.

It’s a really nice service, and from personal experience, I can tell you that the suits stand up to repeated wears. They’re not the most high-quality items in the world, but the fit is truly tailored and the experience of going to a showroom makes you feel like you hired a personal stylist.

It’s good value – we definitely recommend this one for the grooms and groomsmen out there.

5. Brooks Brothers

Screenshot from Brooksbrothers.com
  • Best For: Classic style
  • Price range: $400 to $1200

Brooks Brothers has been in the suit business for 200 years, and that experience shows in its products. The suits are just really nice.

For the most part, they’re reasonably priced, the web ordering experience is simple and the styles are classic. For us, Brooks Brothers is a reliable old favorite.

Most suits at Brook Brothers come with notched lapels, but if you require formal wear, you can get styles with peaked lapels here too. One thing you probably won’t find, though, is the cutting-edge, ultra-modern styles.

Business and business casual is what these guys do best, and it shows. You’re not going to be spoiled for choice, but you’ll encounter some nice, classic fit options.

They’ll also do in-store tailoring if there’s a store in your area. Not all of the stores have in-house tailors, so make sure to call or schedule before just showing up.

6. Charles Tyrwhitt

Screenshot from Charlestyrwhitt.com
  • Best For: British Style
  • Price range: $300 to $500

Based in London, Charles Tyrwhitt deals with men’s suits of pretty high quality, offering excellent value for money.

The brand boasts a basic but respectable range of suit styles and they cover fits from extra slim to slim-fits and more classic suit cuts.

The downside to Charles Tyrwhitt’s clothing is that if you are built differently from the average man, you won’t have much luck finding the perfect fit, and they don’t do tailoring other than basic pre-purchase alterations for jackets. You can choose the inside legs of your trousers to a custom size, which is a nice touch, though.

Baiscally, if you want a slice of the unpretentious look that the company does so well, Tyrwhitt’s is a great place to begin. The real reason they made our ranking is that the products are solid, delivery to the U.S. is fast and the brand has a six-month guarantee on suits.

Plus, there are also free returns if you’re not happy with your order. It’s a good customer experience, very reasonable price and a solid product.

7. Hockerty

Screenshot from Hockerty.com
  • Best For: Lower budget
  • Price range: $300 to $500

Using an online 3D suit builder, you can craft your suit from the comfort of your home, similar to the experience of using Indochino or Black Lapel.

In our opinion, this feature definitely makes suit shopping online that bit more exciting, and Hockerty probably has the best UX of all of those brands.

Choose your suit style, add what fabrics you want, measure yourself with the help of a video, and your tailor-made suit will be crafted for you.

Suit prices start at a very reasonable $250, and, what’s more, you won’t be made to pay for additional tailoring with any of their made-to-measure suits. Simply outline your required changes and send the suit back.

We didn’t test returns or alterations for this product, but they have a pretty good policy: if you’re not happy with the fit, contact customer service and they’ll either:

  • Make additional alterations
  • Make you a new suit from scratch.

Hockerty gets a special shoutout as one of only a few online stores with a great range of suits to the option of paying in installments through Klarna. That’s pretty helpful for a big purchase, and they get some love for that.

8. Tom James

Screenshot from Tomjames.com
  • Best For: Professional
  • Price range: $700 to $2000

Tom James is another bespoke tailor that can custom-make suits in whatever way you wish. Ok, so the prices are rather steep, but in terms of quality, we think these suits are some of the best.

They have a pretty unique business model, too.

Basically, you consult with one of their “clothiers” – a consultant that can meet up with you at your home or office. They’ll talk about your style preferences, even look at what you have right now, and make some recommendations. You get measured, pick what you want and then it’s tailored to your body.

When it’s finished, your consultant will meet with you for a final fitting, where they’ll make sure everything fits as it’s supposed to and you’re happy. If you’re not happy, they’ll take it back and make alterations.

In terms of sheer choice, Tom James gets our seal of approval. For example, if you want pinstripes, the most original designs, out-of-the-box fabrics, and more, Tom James has you covered. They have a borderline ridiculous selection in terms of variety.

9. SuitSupply

Screenshot from Suitsupply.com
  • Best For: Alternative Fashions
  • Price range: $600 to $1300

SuitSupply has a loyal following of men who know what they want in a suit and where to find it. Their range perfectly builds on the classic suit but with a modern vibe, such as slightly shorter jackets and subtle European flecks of design in bold, daring fabrics.

There’s minimal padding in many of these suits, which lends to the modern feel; these suits are certainly in no way restrictive or boxy to wear and move around.

Their price points start at somewhere around $400, and their user-friendly online service takes no more than ten minutes to use. Any problems, and their professional and friendly customer service team can guide you through everything in no time.

From a customer service perspective, one of the best things about SuitSupply is the in-store tailoring. Their in-store tailors know what they’re doing, and you can get alterations done usually in two or three business days.

10. J.Hilburn

Screenshot from Jhilburn.com
  • Best For: Personal shopping experience
  • Price range: $700 to 2000

J.Hilburn really knows how to give its customers a custom shopping experience. Basically, you connect with one of their personal stylists in your area. You’ll meet up. They’ll measure you and get some information on your preferences.

We like them because this service is so much more than a quick take of your measurements. Your stylist will talk you through styling and material options, in detail, so you can be confident that you will get exactly what you want.

J.Hilburn has a wide range of stylists covering almost all of North America. Most places in the U.S. specifically, you’ll be able to get someone nearby.

The main downside of this system is that it can end up being pretty costly. We like the service, but would only recommend it if you’re looking for more than just a custom-made suit. The brand offers a pretty good range of mens clothing – and some items definitely lean more casual.

Other Places To Buy Suits Online

There are some other great online stores where you can get a great suit made.

These include:

  • Men’s Wearhouse
  • Macy’s
  • Jos. A. Bank
  • iTailor
  • Alton Lane

These honorable mentions, like so many on our list, are popular choices for men who know exactly what they want when it comes to a suit.

FAQs

How much does it cost to buy a suit?

A basic suit will cost anywhere from $400 to $600. Don’t expect it to be a show-stopper for that price, though. However – the key word here is basic. If you aren’t looking for a suit to last many years, then a basic one could be ideal.

There is a downside to cheap suits in many cases. Usually, it’s possible to tell just by looking at a suit that it is on the lower end of the price scale. If this is something that concerns you, consider a slightly higher budget.

How much should I spend on my first suit?

Ideally, it’s a good idea to go mid-range if it’s your first time making a purchase on a suit until you get a feel for what you like.

What’s the cheapest quality suit I can buy?

Aim to spend no less than $400 on a new suit. Anything less, and you won’t get the quality you need, and it’ll be a false economy when you have to rebuy sooner rather than later.

Is a good-quality suit a good investment?

Purchase a high-quality suit in a classic style, and chances are, tuxedos aside, you won’t have to shop for a new suit for a long time if you’re only wearing it for special occasions.

Consider the suit an investment in selling yourself. If you look good, you’ll feel good and, therefore, you’ll be more comfortable in situations where a suit is required, such as that all-important job interview or wedding.

What can help make my suit look good?

Make sure your suit is tailored to your body. Most of these options are either made-to-measure suits or the brands offer in-store tailoring.

You also want to make sure that your suit accessories are on-point. Match your tie, your socks, your belt, your shoes.

And make sure you’re not ruining your look with ill-fitting undershirts or underwear. Avoid the baggy cotton undershirt and go with a premium undershirt that’s designed to conform to the body, protect your dress shirt from sweat and odor and is comfortable.

It seems like a small detail, but it really can make the difference.
